AAC/aacPlus encoded audio written to ISO MPEG-4 file format. Same as .m4a but different file extension.
AAC is successor to the popular MP3 format. AAC provides the same quality as MP3 with 2/3th of the bitrate; 128 kbit/s AAC stream will provide the same sound quality as 192 kbit/s MP3.
aacPlus is successor to the popular MP3 format and extension to the AAC format. aacPlus provides the same quality as MP3 with half of the bitrate; E.g. 64 kbit/s AAC stream will provide the same sound quality as 128 kbit/s MP3.
Parametric Stereo format is even better; 48 kbit/s aacPlus Parametric Stereo format provides same sound quality as 128 kbit/s MP3.
AAC and aacPlus are lossy audio codecs.
