[ Solved ] FLAC 5.1 -> OPUS 5.1

Post by ox_triangle » Wed Dec 19, 2018 3:49 pm

have a pack is saved in FLAC 5.1 (2-3Mb/s)
have convert it in OPUS 5.1 at 48kb/s (VBR)

result is strange...

7/9 files results in 500-600 kb/s
1/9 file results in 230 kb/s
1/9 file results in 85 kb/s

if you would test this..

I will test it again against the reference opusenc.exe.

Reference opusenc.exe minimum bitrate for the multichannel audio is 16kbit/s per channel. It seems like that the minimum (officially supported) bitrate for the Opus 5.1 is 96 kbit/s.

Bitrates with the 96 kbit/s encodings are identical between the reference opusenc.exe and EZ CD Audio Converter.

If you are looking to encode to a specific bitrate rather than for quality, then you can use CVBR encoding mode instead

VBR

Use variable bitrate encoding (default) In VBR mode the bitrate may go up and down freely depending on the content to achieve more consistent quality.

CVBR

Use constrained variable bitrate encoding.

Outputs to a specific bitrate. This mode is analogous to CBR in AAC/MP3 encoders and managed mode in Vorbis coders. This delivers less consistent quality than VBR mode but consistent bitrate.

Set mode from "Auto" to "Music" and it will work correctly with 48 and 56 kbit/s bit rates.

Obviously it seems to be a "feature" of the official Opus encoder.

I wrote a workaround for the Opus encoding in EZ CD Audio Converter;

It will now force the "Music" mode for the multi-channel audio when the bit rate is less than 96 kbit/s. Works perfectly.
