Taggable True-HD Atmos

Post by mlknez » Wed May 17, 2023 9:27 pm

Hello,

I have many Dolby True-HD Atmos files in raw .thd format. I would like to convert them (lossless Dolby Atmos intact) to a taggable format. Which format and method would accomplish this? Thank you in advance.

I convert all lossless file formats to FLAC.
I did not try to convert True-HD Atmos files and I'm not sure that you will retain correct channel positions, but you can try.

DVD Audio Extractor lets me rip the True-HD Atmos tracks as .thd files. Those are not taggable. I can play them with full Atmos support via Jriver, but I would like to convert to a taggable format. Flac does not retain the atmos support. mp4 and mka should but i see no support for .thd files from this company.

I was told to rip ATMOS tracks to .MKA

I was testing with that and then just now tagged it up with JRiver. When I checked with "MidiaInfo" there are only very basic tags there.

No Artist, Album Artist, Album name etc...

At least JRiver will keep track of the tags in the database. Not sure where else I would play them from in any case?

Thanks for the reply. What did you rip them with? Were the tracks part of a video or were they stand-alone audio?

I just figured out how to do it. Just use MKVToolNix. It will import the .thd and convert to .mka thus rendering it taggable without losing anything.

I've only test one track so far. From Rush Moving Pictures Blu-Ray Audio.

Ripped the track with MKVToolnix.

Came out amazing and to me sounds like playing from the disc. Play via JRiver and of course it has to be bitstreamed to a receiver that can decode the Atmos signal.

Since I can only really play them via JRiver anyways I am not too worried about the tagging at this point.

I have DVD-Audio Extractor but I didn't realize it could extract the ATMOS tracks natively. Will have to give that a try.

MKVToolnix does a good job but I don't see much options for tagging. Also in the case of this particular BD-Audio probably many if not most of the tracks are individual .m2ts files. So you can guess which track is which based on the size but I don't see any other way of tagging or even naming them till they have been ripped and partially listened to.

@ Easy. Ripping Atmos to FLAC does not capture the true full surround aspect at all. It still sounds good but nowhere near the actual Atmos sound.

Hi.

So I just ripped my Rush Signals 40th to the Atmos .thd files with DVD Audio Extractor.

Then I used MKVToolnix to convert the .thd files to .mka.

I had to add each file & Create a Batch job for it though which seems a bit more time consuming than it needs to be. But it did work and I now have the full album in individual Atmos capable .mka files.

I was wondering. In a previous post you indicated that you were able to play the .thd files in JRiver? I tried and it would not even add them to the playing now window. No error it just seemed to ignore the fact that I asked it to play them?

May I ask what you might have done to get JRiver to recognize and play them?

Also if you figure out a way to drop multiple .thd files into MKVToolnix and have it automatically keep them as individual .mka files without creating a batch job for each one please let me know.

Thanks.

All you have to do is rename the .thd files to .mka and jriver will play them!

Really?

That's great. I can easily batch rename the extensions.

Thanks for the info.

Carl.
