Revisit TRACKNUMBER = nn/NN and DISCNUMBER = n/N FLAC tag options

Post by paulster » Sun Aug 27, 2023 10:26 pm

In earlier versions of EZ CD Audio Converter (2.6 and earlier IIRC) you stored the FLAC tags for TRACKNUMBER and DISCNUMBER in nn/NN and n/N format respectively.

Thereafter you changed to using discrete tags for TRACKNUMBER, TRACKTOTAL, DISCNUMBER and DISCTOTAL, citing this being adopted as a Vorbis Comments standard.

I still, to this day, cannot see any evidence of that ever being ratified as a standard. And, indeed, those additional tags are not included as standard tags in other well-respected tagging software such as mp3tag, further suggesting that they are a commonly-accepted tagging format and not a formal standard.

I get that you like this format and it suits your needs, but I've been having to run with ancient DLLs for years now (see viewtopic.php?t=12241 to demonstrate that we've been discussing this going back 7 years) in order to get consistent tagging across my library, because I know that the original format works perfectly with my hi-fi system, my the systems in my cars, and with my FLAC->mp3 conversion process to allow me to have an automatically-maintained library for portable players.

So I would really like to propose a configurable option to have the choice of which tag format to write for disc and tracknumber formats.

Thanks.

I think I can make it configurable in the format options. I saved this to my TODO-list.

Here's the test version with an option to write

TRACKNUMBER = nn/NN and DISCNUMBER = n/N

Please let me know it's correct ? :D

This looks like a great solution, and will save me a ton of editing after ripping.

I just tested it with Audio Converter quickly and it looks good. I'm expecting some new CDs to arrive today, so I'll test CD Ripper a little later.

Looks good with ripping CDs as well. Thanks for getting this implemented.

I don't mean to thread hijaack but a related question: Poiko, could you implement a similar option for converting to musepack (.mpc)/other formats that use ape tags from flac/other formats with total tracks/discs that would not write total tracks/discs to the ape tags instead of "3/3" etc? A number of audio players seem to have issues reading ape tag track and disc numbers with the "/" for whatever reason, even though x/x is the correct specification.
