HDCD

Post by 78heretic » Mon Feb 26, 2024 9:40 pm

First of all, EZ CD Audio Converter is my goto for CD ripping and audio conversions. Great product!

I see that the subject of HDCD decoding has come up in this forum over the years, but nothing seems to have come of it. Would it be possible to add a flag in the CD Ripper display, similar to the 'Pre-emphasis' flag, to indicate when HDCD is set on a disc? I have a number of CDs that are not marked HDCD on the packaging, and it would help with my conversion to 24-bit if I knew which discs actually had the flag set.

Thanks very much!

Greetings 8heretic,

I think the detection of HDCD would be a valuable addition to EZCD.
If it could be added as an optional function (Detect HDCD Encoding = Yes|No) and this his could be performed prior to CD rip processing. From my understanding, this would require each CD track to be sampled (for several seconds) to detect the presence of HDCD's fingerprint in the data stream. This is unlike Pre-Emphasis which is indicated in (a) the CD TOC (Table of Contents) and (b) Individual Track sub-channel (so its easy to quickly detect).

There is information at: https://wiki.hydrogenaud.io/index.php?t ... alyze_mode specifically regarding detection, with the programming interface already in existance.

In addition, I notice the above WWW page says "Do not batch-convert your lossless audio to 24-bit. Leave your lossless CD rips 16-bit and use an audio player capable of decoding HDCD, like ...: FYI

Lets await Jukka's response.
Regards, Andrew

There are almost 16,000 titles on discogs.

Thanks for the responses and great information. I had a quick look in Discogs and found that I have a number of HDCD encoded discs that are not in the database, so it looks like I have some work to do!

It seems that I was wrong in my understanding that HDCD is simply indicated by a flag. I must have read too much into the ffmpeg documentation!

I would probably leave the ripped files alone if I was only playing them on my PC, and had a player that supports HDCD (I mainly use foobar2000, but can't get the HDCD plugin to install), but I like to convert them to 24-bit FLAC for portability.

Cheers!

I added a request to the 'Wishlist' Forum ... "HDCD Detection - Rip Log" ...

HDCD output is 20-bit you can get 32-bit float if you set output format to 32-bit float but there is no benefit of using it. FLAC does not support 32-bit float lossless it is converted to 32-bit integer in Auto mode.

De-emphasis actual accuracy is 32-bit float (but it defaults to 24-bit output in lossless Auto mode lossy formats take its input as 32-bit float) I would be able to increase de-emphasis accuracy to 64-bit float but I don't think it needs it).

You may want to add an HDCD tag for "1" yes. :)

I can't do a CRC test without a 1 error on all tracks but the CRCs are correct.
Regular non-HDCD CD's don't have it.

I just noticed this one...

If you go to Setting and Drive settings if you have one drive Enable error detection is on and the other drive is turned off
when you shut down the app restart it and check those settings, they'll both be turned on.

It's a bug I guess (Or intentional I will need to check the code). It seems to enable it for all drives when you enable it.

If you go to Setting and Drive settings if you have one drive Enable error detection is on and the other drive is turned off
when you shut down the app restart it and check those settings, they'll both be turned on.
