[ Fixed ] Metadata update on mp3 causes Win10 timestamps to be reset

Post by LeCluz » Sun Mar 04, 2018 5:15 pm

Hi,

I just noticed a recent bug I believe in the most recent version of EZCDAC version 7.1.2 running on Windows 10 x64 (NTFS file system)

Every time I update the metadata (menu Metadata > Edit metadata) of an mp3 file, the creation date of the file gets reset. It's a serious problem for me because I use the "creation date" properties to sort my files.

I did some testing and :
- this issue/behavior is not noticed on FAT32. I used an SD card to run the test from my Win10 computer
- this issue/behavior is not noticed on Windows 7 x64. I used a different computer running Win 7 with NTFS filesystem as well and the same version of EZCDAC

I remember in a previous version of EZCDAC, there was on option tu update or not the timestamps but I can't find it anymore.

Could you please take a look because I cannot use the software anymore as I don't want to get all my file timestamps to be reset.

Thanks.

Pierre

Will be fixed. May be possible with other formats too, I will check the behaviour with all of them.

Actually. I was able to test the behavior today. There is no problem on my Windows 10 NTFS. MP3 creation date is preserved on metadata update.

Hi, thanks for looking into it. I'm quite surprised though. Would it be some sort of settings then ?

I'm attaching a video to make sure we're on the same page. The windows is freshly installed with default factory settings.
I'm also attaching msinfo you can check the system version.

That's strange. Exactly the same procedure on my computer no creation date is changed. :/

Is there any debugging options to understand what's going on ?

I do not understand why it happens on your computer.

EZ CD does not create a new file when it updates mp3 metadata. It opens the existing file and modifies its contents.

It's weird though because If I edit the file within Winamp, the issue does not occur. :?

Alright, so I found a way to reproduce the issue.
I formated a USB stick with NTFS (default block size) under Windows 10. The issue is noticed on mp3 files that you put on that stick
I re-formatted that same USB stick with NTFS (default block size) under Windows 7 x64, the issue does not occur this time.
I tried Windows 8.1 and it appears to behave like Windows 10.
Something in the way NTFS is formated under Windows 10/8.1 impacts EZCDAC, not Windows 7. Could you please help figure what ? Thanks

It seems like the creation date changes if the mp3 files are on the different drive than C:

I will investigate it more

I changed the master write metadata function so that it always keeps the original creation date. So it will always work regardless of the format or the location of the file. Fix in the next update.

Awesome ! Though I worked around the issue by formatting the D: drive using Gparted instead of Windows 10. Even if the files are not on the C:\ drive, the problem is not noticed anymore.
Thanks !
